When I began my internship with Heneghan in August 2011, there were limited opportunities due to the economy at the time. Internships were the main entry point to the sector and from the very first day, Heneghan was an excellent learning environment due to its range of clients but also the willingness of staff members to teach. This enabled me to listen and observe, and gradually engage in day-to-day client activity which increased as time progressed.
Due to the job market at the time, the best piece of advice I received was - no one is indispensable – identify something in the agency and take ownership. For me, this was a myriad of things including observing team meetings, researching clients, and using this information to identify potential opportunities. This ranged from refreshing new business material and analysing the agency in terms of its social media activity in comparison to competitors, and carrying out intern tasks to the highest standard.
